Jim Souhan: Killebrew's caring nature shows even when he needs sympathy

As Harmon Killebrew deals with cancer, the slugger has been quick to offer comfort to others. "It just speaks to the character of him,'' Justin Morneau said.

Harmon should go down as the #4 HR hitter...Ruth, Aaron and Thome and "Killer" did their hr damage without steiroids!!!! Selig in honor of Harmon should remove all steroid HR's from the books or if he won't do that...create two record books for all baseball....no steroids and steroids and then have the fans internet choose and if the fans choose no steroids...the others go bye-bye... I mean Pete Rose is banned from baseball for life for gambling but yet the "rhoid" guys aren't?

I've met Harmon twice. Both times, he was like my grandpa--kind, caring, and with a definitely relaxed presence about himself; no ego whatsoever. People who are that comfortable with themselves, especially having accomplished what he did, are almost disarmingly cool! When Harmon asked how you were, he genuinely cared about the answer. I found him more engaging than Hank Aaron, who certainly is regarded as an easy-going fellow as well, so that's saying something. Harmon, simply put, is one of the nicest people we'll ever meet, and we should all pray for his comfort physically and spiritually right now. A true hero for all of Twins Territory--and all of baseball, for time immemorial--Harmon Killebrew. We love you, Harmon.

Harmon Killebrew has been my hero for as long as I can remember. I never met him but have heard nothing but nice things about him. No scandals, just a good guy. I have to disagree with the statement that Justin Morneau made, "If there's a better place, he's going to it, that's for sure.''.Being a great guy does not get you into heaven. Repenting and putting your faith in Jesus Christ is the only way. I'll pray for Harmon and have this hope that he knows the truth or that someone will share it with him.

When I was a teenager, my dad who'd survived polio as a child and walked with extreme difficulty decided to take us to a Twins game. The walk from our parking place, with his crutches and steel brace, to the Metrodome was slow and miserable for him, but we had a wonderful time at the game. When the game was over we waited till the stadium emptied out to begin our trek to the car. As we walked a car pulled up and a young man said to my father, please let me give you a lift to your car, sir. It was Harmon Killebrew. To this day, some 50 years later, I remember his act of kindness with gratitude. What he did meant so much to my dad. Thank you sir, for your kindness.

Sorry Met Stadium, not Metrodome.

The headline is wrong. Harm deserves our respect and gratitude, for being a role model to generations, even at the end. God bless!

It seems like the description of Roy Campanella in the book "The Boys of Summer" fits Harmon pretty well too: a "noble wreckage of an athlete. A dazzling palace of a man." His news saddens me greatly, and I wish him the very best.
