La Velle E. Neal III's Sunday Insider: Reyes is style plus substance

  • Article by: LA VELLE E. NEAL III , Star Tribune

Jose Reyes is a rare breed of shortstop who could become available in a mid-season deal if the Mets' troubles persist.

What a waste of time. One of the most irritating articles I've read in some time.

There is no way Reyes is coming to the Twins.

Nice idea, LENIII, but Billy Smith's too bright to swing such a deal, or to land Reyes long-term. You see, Billy's too busy working on the three-year, $50 million extension for Cuddyer, and a three-year, $36 million extension for Joe Nathan at present to worry about little things like middle-infield stability. Billy's just too shrewd, too wise for that type of play. Look at how be built a couple of 95-game losers at AAA and AA last year. Look at how he's gutted the minor league rosters, at the plethora of off-season acquisitions he made this past winter, so as to allow the Twins to take the next step. That type of savvy takes a lot of cerebral aptitude, and us commoners--you, me, and every other fan--are just to ignorant to see Billy's long-term plan. But we can see this much: a slouch like Reyes doesn't fit into the "Twins mold."

Good article. I can't see Reyes as a long-term solution for the Twins because of his injury history. But Lavelle is probably right that the Twins won't be interested. They are more concerned with continuing their extended spring training. As they wait for Nathan, Morneau and Cuddy to return to their old form. The Twins front office needs to realize that without competetive, exciting baseball and optimism for the fans, attendance and general interest in the Twins will diminish.

Reyes is exactly what the Twins need. The middle infield is a joke. It's like Keystone Kops.

The Twins would never make such a move, not even if it was actually good for the team. People around here better get used to the fact that the team is broken, and that the way they're playing might well be how it's going to be for the next few years. They're not what they were supposed to be, and their holes are way bigger than anyone acknowledged going into the season. For that matter, their farm system is weak, so the future (aside from Kyle Gibson) isn't exactly promising. And not that this article is about Mauer, but if given the chance, would any true Twins fan let the team sign that contract again? It's going to be an anchor for this team for the next decade.

How about a trade..Morneau or Mauer for REyes. We give up no offense, and get some in return. Maybe we could even get Santana back!! By the way, the day after it was reported that Gardy wanted Cuddy in RF for a while...he starts him at 1B...go figure.

Amen LEN! A catalyst at a position of extreme need. We have what it takes to make a play. Let's see if Bill Smith and the Pohlad boys have the guts to make it happen.

As much fun as it is to think about Jose Reyes in a Twins uniform, it is more realistic to think that half of the current team will not wear one after the trade deadline.

I appreciate your willingness to mock the Twins' present situation. The last few lines were my favorite. As you can see by the lack of comments that the Twins are just not that big a priority anymore. Hopefully, that will change, but I don't see how.
