Unvarnished truth drives U coach, punter

Jerry Kill won't mince words about the lowly state of the U's punt game, but Dan Orseske isn't taking it too personally.

It's great to see significant emphasis on the punting game and field position again. I recall sitting in old Memorial Stadium when Murry Warmath used to call for the punt on third down. The fans would cheer becausethey understood the Gophers would most likely score on their next possession, because of field position.

How many times did the coaches from the previous staff mess with a player's technique and make them worse. Fisch with Weber comes to mind, and with Orseske as well. Glad we have a coaching staff that knows how to coach. Cant wait for this Saturday!!

Hopefully, the Killster will be as successful at Minnesota as he has been in his previous stops. Further, that saying all of the right things (Brewster did the same thing albeit with no knowledge and experience based to support it) will prove to be supported by improvements on the field. Hopefully, even to the point of fielding a competitive team within 2-3 years. Still hard to understand why Maturi ever hire Brewster who was clearly in over his head from day on of his unsuccessful tenure at Minnesota. Just simply cannot understand that at all as Brewster clearly had absolutely nothing to off the program!

I have been a life long Gophers fan. Even through all the bad years, and believe me, there have been plenty of them. But never in my life have I watched a spring football game. But I intend to watch it this year. Maybe I'm being sucked in, but I like what I'm seeing and hearing from Jerry Kill. Jerry Kill has proven that he can coach a football team. We don't know what will happen as to coaching in the Big Ten. But winners in ANY endeavor all talk the same. I'm hearing this kind of talk from Jerry Kill. THAT'S why I'm excited. I don't expect him to win all his games and go on to win the Rose Bowl. At least, not yet. But I do expect to see improvements in HOW the football team plays. If the Gophers can go .500 this year, I think that will be great strides for what Brewster did to the Gopher program.

If Coach Kill is as serious about the punting game as he says, he has definitely come to the right place. We'll be punting more than anyone in the big10.

Glad that the annual story on the punter is done--let's hope it's the last, anyway.
