The Gophers coach said the true gauge of the university's commitment to men's basketball will come down to dollars and cents, an issue he's carried to school officials.

Thank you, Myron. The practice faculty is a necessity just to stay even with other programs.

"greater investments don't always result in better performances" Exhibit A: gopher football team, new stadium yet still the laughing stock of the Big Ten

Only $15 million? No problem, Tub. Forget the fundraising and go straight to the legislature. In an era when the state's commitment to education is under fire across the board, I'm sure our priorities will provide for a new practice facility to serve a team whose spiral toward the conference cellar was ended only by the end of the schedule. For starters, when you are able to assemble players who can and will show academic progress and stay out of legal trouble, I might be a tad more interested in the project.

I have not been happy with the lack of progress on the court under Tubby Smith. That said the one thing I like about having a coach with his power overseeing our basketball program is he can call out the "U" like this. This is a MAJOR University, that has been getting minor results in athletics throughout my lifetime. A large part of that is the unwillingness to play the financial game that is critical to prolonged success in revenue sports.

You lost 14 have no leverage...

Funny, I didn't hear any players saying 'I came to Butler because of the practice facility.' Tubby, go find another excuse to retire but don't play facilities card.

nomorebrewApr. 14, 11 7:34 AM

Maybe Tubby should put his money where his mouth is and make a major donation to the project! How committed are YOU to Minnesota Two Million Dollar Man?

The Tubster is absolutely right in claiming that the Gophers cannot compete without a new practice facility. We all remember Uncle Sid carrying the water for Lou Holtz in claiming that a new football practice facility was necessary in order for the football team to win. Uncle Sid was absolutely correct as he always is, of course, given how many conference championships and major bowl wins that have rolled in since the new facility was built. I am sure that the basketball team will have the same kind of success once that doggone new facility is built. I mean, Butler has gone to the national championship game two years in a row albeit losing both. On the other hand, according to its very successful coach, Butler does not have a separate practice facility or any kind of "fancy facilities.' Then, of course, they did lose both national championship games, presumably because they didn't have a separate practice facility, right? Is it possible that success on the court might have something to do with recruiting, coaching, smart and disciplined players who can play team ball and not about the lack of a separate practice facility? I mean, could Uncle Sid be wrong about the benefits of a separate practice facility...once again?

Where do they planning on fitting the practice facility? There isn't too much room on campus...

scoot54Apr. 14, 11 8:26 AM

I agree that this program needs to stay on equal footing as far as facilities go, but Tubby needs to take a look in the mirror and improve his job on the floor. I see us being out coached more times than I ever would have imagined, under Smith. The defections are also troubling. Every once in a while your going to lose a player, but what's happened here over the last couple years is a disturbing trend.
