It may depend on the retail chain - different stores may attract customers with different levels of snottiness. I have a friend who lost his job in the recession and has been working at a Target while searching for another real job. It's a rare day that he doesn't have an encounter with a customer who's rude and condescending. The bulk of the people may be nice, but there are a disturbing number of people who think "the customer is always right" is their license to be a jerk.
