Making a rural comeback: The old gravel road

I remember that the first roads to be paved were always past the county commissioners houses. Gravel is fine.

Maybe if the road crews didn't have people standing around holding signs all day that read SLOW, they'd be better able to afford the maintenance...?

Funny how a handful of urban neighborhoods were reported in the Strib over the past few years to fight to keep their gravel road because of the "rural" feeling. One thing, this will remove all incentive for a rural resident to get a styrofoam cup car, when your have to drive around a rippled gravel road or soggy gravel slosh you really favor pickups or SUVs.

It sucks, but we're broke. The road I live on only got paved about 10 years ago. If I had to choose between my road going back to gravel, and higher taxes, I'll take the former.

This is the dumbest thing I've read in awhile. This story makes it sounds like gravel roads are maintenance free. THEY ARE NOT!! In townships and counties short on aggregate resources tar is the best choice because of trucking costs.
