This is a wonderful story of an angel in everyday dress. I too have encountered such angels, and I am sure most of us have. I strive to be an angel to others too but I am afraid I am not nearly so successful Mr. Winton was. I guess I will have to try a bit harder. Perhaps if a lot of us tried a bit harder, the world would be transformed into a glorious place.

What a great story. That is a time in this Worlds history that we should never forget. When we gripe about "how tough" we think we have it, this is a story we should sit down an read...over and over. I will read it to my kids in the morning.

I've heard bits and pieces of this story before as a student of Lisa Gumpel's at Morris. I appreciate being able to read about what this great teacher went through, and happy that she's been able to share her story with the public.

I am grateful to the Tribune for bringing Lisa Gumpel's story, as it is essential that we recognize and continue to learn about the individuals who survived the Holocaust—the hardships they endured during and after those dark times. Lisa Gumpel's contributions as professor and scholar are a tribute to her life-long dedication to the values the Third Reich so brutally tried to destroy in its genocidal reign. It is also fitting that Americans become acquainted with Nicholas Winton's work and his selfless dedication. He was truly Britain's Schindler. Thanks to Jeff Strickler for such a thoughtful treatment.
