Those hunting days are days we need to share with our kids and grandkids. They will remember them forever. Great story!

Dennis-these are stories that just take me back to simpler times. It really isn't about the hunt as much as the time with family and friends isn't it...Nice story.

I grew up 7 miles from Renville and know the Smith's. Nice people.

Yes, Renville County has changed as have all counties in Minnesota. In recent years there was no waving prairie grass on Stevens Avenue in south Minneapolis, but there were beautiful homes where a freeway now exists. Life does go on. However,Bill and Mary Lou Smith will never change. They may move more slowly, but they are unique and beautiful people. The word portrait of them is right on! Thank you for honoring two great people!

Great read Dennis. I have known the Smith's most of my life. Great family, even Dan. Just emailed this story to my son in Afghanistan.

Do you see from the comments above how people react to non-political stories. We all like hearing about good people. Maybe there's a lesson here for all to consider as we hear other stories that are really negative.

Dennis, I have enjoyed your writing for many years. Your stories of hunting and fishing especially in Minnesota and South Dakota. I spent many years in my youth hunting in Southern Minnesota with my grandfather and uncles. Fast forward to the mid 90's when I lived in South Dakota and I had many occasions to walk fields and draws with dogs and a few close friends. Thanks for sharing your memories.
