It wouldn't have mattered who they hired. The U of M is an embarrassment in sports, beyond joke level, to the point where students don't even bother to go to the games. Even in Hockey, the Gophers are now a laughingstock. The Big 10 should do them a favor and kick them out.

I have to agree with Jim. Tubby came in here and was seen as a savior. He was treated like he was John Wooden.Good coaches don't get run out at good schools. Minnesota has no offense. I ran more extensive offensive sets on my 7th grade team. And sorry folks, but people don't appear to be lining up to play for coach Smith. This team even with its big men needs to run. Outside of Blake no one can shoot, so why set up a half court offense that stinks anyway. You might even consider recruiting strictly based on free throw percentage. I am to the point where it is time to let the big name no production coach collect his check elsewhere. Any coach can get average talent and do what Tubby has done with it, but its the real coach like Bo Ryan that takes average talent and gets the most out of it.

Jim, let's assume for the moment everything you've said is not only technically correct, but relevent. So after Tubby departs, just who is it that is going to pick the next BB coach, and just what promising coaches are going to take on chance on this storied program? The entire athletic program at UM has sunk into sub-mediocrity. The only teams worth a hoot are so far from the "revenue sports" that they may as well be in North Dakota: women's hockey, volleyball, and men's baseball. Ineptitude Rules in Dinkytown, Jim, and until something is done about that, why pick on one coach?

Souey should have stayed in Chicago, he loves when things go bad for the Gophers, Vikings, Twins, or whoever. Tubby lost White, Mo Walker, thankfully Devoe Joseph, and unfortunately Al Nolen. Very few teams can function well without their point guard. Who knew Ralph Sampson would be so slow to develop physically and we would have 3 great freshmen but as Clem would have said, "not ready to play" but they now have to step it up. Go with Mbakwe and Hoffarber as your main go to guys and the others will fill in admirably.

If Al Nolen hadn't gotten hurt, the gophers would be working on a 5 seed.

Point taken, Jim. If he was that good, he'd still be at Kentucky. If Tubby couldn't recruit for UK, how can he get players at the U? They'd be better served to find a hungry go-getter coach who wants a crack at a Big 10 team.
