Republican lawmakers who now control the purse strings have said they will balance the budget without raising taxes or harming vulnerable residents. Many outside the caucus believe that's not possible.********************************************************************************* Sure...and you can lose all the weight you want without exercise and eating chocolate bon-bons all day. These people are beneath contempt. Yes it's going to be devastating to our most vulnerable citizens. Don't play us for idiots. Hey...but don't raise taxes. Those folks in Wayzata might have to resort to raking their own sand traps. " how you treat the least among you, do so do unto me ". Jesus Christ must really proud.

Another sob story from the Star. Maybe next time you can write about how Minnesota's high taxes are driving business and jobs away. Or how our welfare system has encouraged a single-mom family structure which has resulted in raising criminals instead of good citizens.

Great, a Jesus quote. You had some good comments until you threw that in there. This is not the whole reason, but it is one of the reasons for our astronomical health care costs: Only in the USA is our health care so advanced that we can allow human life to be supported for conditions that would have a grim outlook in other countries or as long ago as 10 years. In some cases, infants with life threatening illnesses can now live into their 20's...at a cost of a million plus dollars a year. Are the parents who decided to carry out the pregnancy paying for these costs?

@rainierman - Most Minnesotans aren't on welfare nor are they being raised by single mothers on welfare. So what does MN quality of life have to do with the inability of welfare mothers to raise their kids properly?

@dougl35534 - just citing facts about how our welfare system has failed our poor. I am not angry about it, just sad.

Clearly we need to invoke big government and force theft upon every taxpayer to solve this problem.

The net is not only strained it has a hole in it that no one will fix... what was a help program for single mothers has burgeoned into major fraud against us taxpayers, Illegals are getting freebies from that corrupt system that again scams us taxpayers...cut off the magnet that draws the fraudsters...one cannot allow the welfare machine to be used by major breeders who use it to live their angry lives and blame the system because of the situation the find themselves in by their own devices...it is unsustainable and it is immoral!

I could see this coming. Put some tough financial decisions on the table and watch it get nasty fast. If you wouldn't say it in the presence of your mother, then keep it to yourself. Just because your signature and face isn't posted with your comments doesn't mean you aren't responsible for what you say.
