I've always thought this was one of the most powerfully written pieces of journalism I've ever read. I saved the place so I could show it to my kids when they were old enough to need it. By the time you're done reading, you know Joe as if he were a friend of the family, so it's like knowing someone who died of LSD. I can't think of any stronger deterrent than that.
