Nice-guy Richards' 'bag skate' turned year around

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune

On Oct. 17, Todd Richards forced his team to do battle drills, then ordered a "bag skate'' -- endless sprints and laps. Several players said it was one of the toughest practices of their lives. Things changed.

I don't buy the whole "fire Richards" plot that the media plays up. CL had one GM and one coach the whole time he was in Nashville and they are still there. You don't hire a first time GM like CF, then participate in the hiring of a first time coach only to fire one or the other in the first few years. Any of that would make Leipold look bad. He hired these guys because he knew they were good people who would grow into their roles as the Wild developed into a stronger organization top to bottom.

Richards should have been fired at the in November of 2009 since then he has been above average.

MikecGrimes, Your saying Richards should have been fired two months into his coaching career, even though he was completely over hauling the system from what the team played for 8 years prior. Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard.

I saw an article by Souhan about hockey and cringed. It wasn't bad, but is that it? Cripes, Russo does more than that on his vacations.

Interesting. It seems the Wild have evolved into a team. I think they could still use more toughness, but why mess with success ... even though Mietinen still is a waste of a roster spot. By the way, Burns was sensational last night! A bit overactive, but exciting nonetheless.

It took me a while to figure it out, but then it hit me. Gardy was at the game last night. That's the only reason that Mr. Souhan was in the building. Please stick to being a uninteresting baseball writer who really just wants to be buddies with the manager. Just because you wonder into the X twice a year doesn't mean you know anything about the team.
