Ten years after Joe's death, grief and a message endure

  • Article by: Al Sicherman , Star Tribune

Ten years ago, on Nov. 8, 1989, my column appeared not in the Star Tribune's Variety section but on the newspaper's front page. "Dear, dear friends," it began. "This isn't going to be easy."

I remember reading what you wrote about your son's death and life in 1989, when my kid was nine. I always appreciated the reminder on the anniversaries of his passing, to "hug your kids". When my kid was a teen, I really needed the reminder too. I am grateful for those reminders, and sorry that you had that particular reason to give them.

This is especially more poignant now after the tragedy of this past week in my son's high school community. I am sending this and your original column to every one I know and to every kid and hoping that they all read them and think a bit before they take these chances with their lives. Thank you once again--for sharing your grief with us in such a way.
