RE: "Dr. James I. Midtling, St. Paul, stayed suspension, limited and conditional license, $3,168 fine. Despite a patient's history of heart failure and complications from surgery under anesthesia, Midtling sedated him. The patient was taken to the hospital and died two days later. Midtling agreed to monitoring, course work and to avoid sedating certain patients until the board allows him."_________He KILLED someone and all he gets is a STAYED suspension, some classes and a $3000 fine??? That won't even pay for the guy's funeral!! It is true, some people can get away with murder.

"He dressed up in an S & M outfit, gave a coworker a penis-shaped chocolate and left a "feminine sanitary aid" in the break room." Makes me appreciate my earnest, yet competent dentist.

I went to Bodin who does a lot of state aid patients and signed to accept their fee schedule. After my work and my copay he then billed and sent to a collection agency the difference between his 'standard charges' and the agreed state fee schedule (plus my copay) because as his bookkeeper said he wants the patient to pay the difference. I won because the law says he can not bill patients more than he agrees to be paid. But I bet a lot of poorer patients do not understand this and eventually pay the overcharge to end the collection calls.

It is unfortunate how this article portrays Dr. Swenson. I realize this is not the Tribunes fault, they are just words, but this shows how without hearing both sides it makes it very unfair. The "S&M" outfit they refer to was not that, it was actually a gladiator costume that by the way he was dressed under (it was a joke), and the urination device was not put on the table, it was actually in a big packet that he received when he went to "Carnival" it was the same type of paper one you get if you go to a woman's conference. All of this was brought on by a disgruntle ex-employee/ex-friend of his that tried to extort money from him (and he won the case in court) Dr. Swenson cares very much about his patients and staff.

I think to be fair, the Strib out to focus occasionally on journalists that abuse reporting standards.. just saying..

My three kids have been going to Dr. Swenson for the past 9 years and he has been wonderful with them. We have had no complaints. I do have to say I'm relieved it was just a gladiator costume though...thank you for clearing that up!

What a great idea. Go into public databases, pull lists of suspended licenses, cut and paste them, and publish them without comment. Don't ask for rebuttals from those named. Don't discuss the censure process, or how to, for example, select a competent professional. Don't ask for comment from the profession. This is journalism? Disgusting. Sammymetro is right on. "Whistleblower" should turn its incisive reporting towards itself.

I don't know which entity I like the least, here. The Minnesota Board Of Slaps On The Wrist. Or, the Star & Public Tribunal.

In regards to Thomas Swenson-Bellson, the MN Board of Dentistry did do an investigation and found NUMEROUS areas of concern and took action. This is the second time he has been turned in, investigated and found "guilty" of substandard dentistry, improper billing, etc. What was written in this article is just the tip of the iceberg,I'm glad he's finally getting the help he so desperately needs...
