Columbia Heights has long been a melting pot. As the city becomes even more diverse, the police are hoping to break down cultural and language barriers.

Wow, what a change we have allowed our Public Safety entities to undertake. I don't think law enforcement should harass people or make their jobs more difficult but I also don't believe the mission of law enforcement is to make immigrants (illegal or legal) feel more comfortable or teach them how to act. I do think that law enforcement has the responsibility to enforce federal laws and make sure illegal aliens are identified and deported. I think the federal government needs to enforce immigration law, limit legal immigration and make sure all new legal immigrants go through an assimilation process. The state can also assist in this process. Law enforcement is suppose to be keeping us safe and enforcing our laws and not undertaking social service roles. Whenever I hear the phrase "embrace diversity" my skepticism meter goes off the chart. In a day when government resources are limited, budgets are out of control and the taxpayer is being soaked we need to really focus our resources on what they are meant for.

I have been working in the area of criminal defense for several years now and am overjoyed to see a law enforcement agency take this step. I think it was only improve relations between other cultures and law enforcement. I have often voiced my concern that law enforcement does not take into account someone's race and in my experience that only leads to trouble. To you Inreality, I say they are also supposed to serve the population and by embracing differences they are serving not only the minority population, but the majority as well. Way to go Columbia Heights!!

What a wonderful story about the way Columbia Heights recognizes the hugely important role that immigration plays (has always played) in the building of, arguably, the most powerful economy in the world. As a business man who helps local manufacturers increase their export sales and create jobs here, I think it is regretable that the Lino Lakes City Council passed that very short-sighted "Official English" resolution. This is an unfortunately negative action in an otherwise positive and welcoming Anoka County, apparently.

Oleyellowhai. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "I have often voiced my concern that law enforcement does not take into account someone's race". If you really do work in criminal defense I would think that you would have seen Lady Justice, without fear or favor, regardless of identity, money, power, or weakness; blind justice and blind impartiality. Race is not a factor in justice.

this country has almost become unrecognizable to me. no other country in the world does for immigrants what the U.S. does. rather than us "embracing diversity" how about immigrants try to adapt.

Dear byegirl, I sense and agree with your frustration with diversity. Diversity for diversity's sake alone is stupid. However, I would point out to you that our charter here in the USA is to take in the immigrant, UNLIKE any other country IN THE WORLD. We are the better and stronger for it. And the sooner the immigrant assimilates into the mainstream, the better off they are. It's the diversity crazies who sadly bring them down.

Earthling..... We do not have a "charter", we have a Constitution and laws. The United States has the right to enforce its' borders, make & apply immigration law, etc. A nation without borders, laws and a common culture/language just isn't a nation. We can't accept everyone in our nation and we should be accepting those that want to come here and be Americans, embrace our culture, embrace our economic system, learn our language, obey our laws and pledge their allegiance to the United States and not the nation they came from. We need reasonable discretion in accepting legal immigrants as that just makes sense, especially in an age of terrorism. We are a great nation & we embrace all types but at the same time we can't be foolish. God Bless America.
