U sees an increase in research money

School has reached "high-water mark" but fears that funding might be drying up.

There is a fundamental problem with research funding that needs to be put on the table. Elsewhere Dr. Mulcahy has acknowledged that 25-30% of the actual cost of doing research is NOT covered by the grant and overhead brought in by the researcher on federal grants. So if the U gets a million dollar grant, it must come up with an additional 250-300K This situation should be acknowledged and state support explicitly for research sought to cover this deficit. If this does not happen then eventually we will have to do less research or drain tuition dollars. Neither alternative is acceptable. W.B.Gleason, U of M faculty and alum
