U got no big name, nor an appealing consolation prize

There's reason to suspect Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi not only failed to make a hire that satisfied fans, but it might have been a choice that failed to satisfy him.

Patrick I love your stuff, but writing that you should base the hiring of a coach on one game is ridiculous. Maturi made a horrible choice in his first attempt at a football coach, let's hope that he did much better this time.

Why doesn't Reusse spend his golden years asking how Maturi was able to get away with hiring a PR flack and personal friend to be a "special assistant" in finding a new football coach. If the Bruininks and the Regents aren't paying attention to what's going on, it's no wonder the U is wasting millions on hiring coaches who aren't qualified, then having to pay ridiculous severance amounts to get rid of them.

There is no way Maturi did better with this one. Who cares is Chryst didn't have head coaching experience. He has done fantastic things as the OC at Wisconsin. They are going to the ROSE BOWL! But instead Maturi went with a coach who lost the MAC title game a week after gaining national recognition. Pathetic. My guess is the price was right and someone with "head coach" experience. Being the head coach at a MAC school could be compared to being the OC at the Big Ten Co-Champ, and 5th ranked school. The Gopher fans would not have been upset if you went back on your 'head coaching experience" word Maturi if you would have hired someone who could recruit competitively against other Big Ten schools and sell tickets. If you insist on keeping all those sports teams, football is the way to do it. You just failed big time. So hats off to you, another year of watching the football team get beat by FBS schools

Pat I disagree that we couldn't land a big name coach. I believe in my heart of hearts that we didn't even try. This was all about saving money, not rejigging a broken program. As long as we have incompetent people in the position to make decisions we are destined to fail. I will be the first one to acknowledge I made a bad judgement in error if Kill takes the Gophers to a 10 win season within 2 years - anything less would be a failure!
