Kill deserves to get a chance from skeptical U fan base

Jerry Kill is not the glamorous coach many Gophers fans had hoped for, but he's been very good over his career.

Kill's not even behind his desk yet and we're already getting excuses...

Sorry Sid, this isn't a Brewster hire but it has all the traits of a Dan Monson move. This program needed a jolt, a Tubby Smih, Lou Holtz kind of move. Can we really expect to attract 4 and 5 star athletes to play in this program for this coach? I don't think so. I'll bet Kill is a good coach and probably a great guy but he isn't what we needed. We would have been better off with Horton staying.

I'm shocked Kill took this job. It's a huge step down from his previous position at a much better football school. I hope he can figure out how to recruit for an inferior program like the Gophers, without the success Northern has had.

Well, since this column is showing up so soon after the story broke, obviously Sid's on the inside with pre-determined spin. From the point of view of restoring public confidence in the program, this hire is an utter disaster. And even Sid can't spin that.

Maturi should have pulled a Steinbrenner/Billy Martin show and brought Mason back. Mason's past assistant coaches had no self interest in saying "if Mason can't win at the U, then no one can". Let's see - Mason did win here and brought some of the most excitement U football has seen for years (witnessing in person our win at Michigan and watching some great offensive teams). I will give JK a couple years, and I am looking forward to the press conference tomorrow. First impressions are usually accurate in identifying football IQ vs. Cheerleading IQ. JK - We want football IQ.

Here are a couple of articles about Kill. He sounds like a hard worker who stresses fundamentals. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-12-03/sports/ct-spt-1203-haugh-david-chicago--20101202_1_niu-coaching-bug-coach-linebackers http://siusalukis.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kill_jerry00.html

This decision defies all logic. I've been following the search closely and it flies in the face of everything Maturi and Bruininks have said they wanted to do with this hire. But more specifically, so many people have been talking about how this was such a great opportunity to turn the program around. Finally you could sell the program with the new stadium and this is what they do??? I understand that they were turned down by some people they would have wanted, but reports tell us that these guys would have taken the job: Leach, Randy Shannon, Philip Fulmer, probably numerous coordinators at big time programs, and maybe Marc Trestman. All would be far more exciting. My worry is that we'll be expected to be happy if he goes out and wins an average of about 5 or 6 games a year. We could have got someone who could win the Big Ten, but with this guy that prospect is clearly less likely. It is a very sad day in the history of the program.

Sid, I will make you a wager - Kill won't win 10 games total in the next 2 years. If I am wrong I will give $1000 to your charity of choice. If I am right you retire and publicly apoligze for supporting this error of a hire. Maturi should be embarrassed with his choice. I don't believe for one second Maturi made an effort to land a winner. This is all about money. BAD JACKED HIRE!
