A budget crisis, continual cuts in the College of Liberal Arts while using its revenue to bolster the rest of the school, spending $600k on firing a coach... and we go for a guy who is best described: "He's just very passionate about athletics." Just spectacular U of M. Just spectacular. It's not bad enough that Pawlenty wants to kill our status as a Land Grant University, but we want to kill ourselves too.

There were six sentences on athletics in this article - seven if you count his mention of a homer hanky. The bulk of the article is about his academic credentials which are quite impressive, quite spectacular, actually. Yes, the President's role in athletics is secondary to academics. Athletics plays a secondary role in this article as well. Just because it is a secondary role doesn't mean it should be totally ignored. Academics and athletics can and often do coexist. All of the colleges in the Big Ten Conference are quite good academically. Read his biography if you want to know more about him: http://www.stonybrook.edu/bnl/erickaler.shtml
