We should embrace this. People rail against immigrants, welfare, using the system, . This is an example of the GOOD that our legal immigration system can provide... Rock on. More of this is what we need.

One of the biggest setbacks to immigrant children succeeding in school is the lack of formal grammar education in their native language. To then learn a new language with new grammar rules - while also trying to retain content is very difficult. In essence, these kids should be taught native language grammar in place of a "3rd" language for suggested college preparation. There are so many native Somali and Spanish speakers taking French, Japanese, (and Spanish for Somali kids) that they butcher three languages rather than master two. English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Native Language, and Arts/PE/Health/Tech should be the norm for them in a 6-period day. Hopefully the new board directors can see this as a benefit.

What a great story and great example of why this is the greatest country in the world. Nice to see what happens when fear doesn't overtake hope and promise!

A little further, and alcohol and dogs will become illegal, just like our founders intended. Remember -- you can't spell "sharia" without "you" and "me".

When I hear people running down immigrants, especially Somali immigrants in Minnesota, I'm always perplexed at their short-sightedness and bigotry. Here we have a group of people who were forced from their homes, often fleeing with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Many of them suffered through the indignities and dangers of life in refugee camps, sometimes for many years. They came to our country seeking refuge and the chance to live as honest, respectable, hard-working members of a community. And despite the many obstacles to that goal, they have by and large succeeded. When the 5 of my 8 great-grandparents who were immigrants came to this country, conditions for immigrants were pretty awful. They were cheated, robbed, forced to work long hours for low pay, given substandard food and housing, little or no healthcare and were constantly targeted by the police and hooligans. Because they, like the Somalis, persevered, I was able to grow up with all of the advantages of a middle-class American, attending great public schools in Minneapolis and graduating with a degree from the University of Minnesota. When I see a group of Somali men catching up with each other on Cedar Avenue, or a couple of Somali girls playing on the swings at Currie Park, or a multi-racial, multi-ethnic group of 3rd graders trooping through the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, I feel proud to live in a community where immigrants are welcomed and encouraged to reach their full potential. Good luck, Hussein! Keep working for your community and mine!

For all the conservatives out there who's mantra of "Speak English", Hussein is on track. Teach it properly. Teach it young. There should be no problem with this.

Power is absolutely balanced, meaning one does not become empowered without disenfranchising another. I am a descendant of white males of European ancestry on whose back this nation was built. My piece of the pie is diminishing quickly, being fed to those who come and enjoy privilege and benefit my ancestors never did. Tragic. Good luck, Somali people. Hopefully, you will do better at helping build and maintain this nation than the one you left. Don't worry - real Americans, the ones with roots of sacrifice, commitment, and deep down patriotism, will always be around to pick up the pieces.

Looks like you could use some reading and writing help. Unless it was to be funny, and if that was the case, it wasn't. Americans who can't properly read, write and speak the language are a big problem as well. But hey, lets keep cutting education funding!
