This is why I voted for Franken. Every single bill he's introduced and action he's taken has been a stand for consumers against big business. Thanks, Al!

Seems to be a little self serving... As he had a reputation for not paying his bills... especially taxes ..... It seems like he wants to associate with those of the criminal element .... people who purchase items, and then refuse to pay their bills.... Franken obviously does not associate with those honest people who pay their taxes and their bills

Way to go Al?! I now know you are best at being a comedian! Give me a break! Take away more responsibility from people and let big government run their lives. I don't get this double standard: 1) We want to be free, and 2) yet we keep taking people's responsibilities away from them. If you buy it, pay for it. If you can not, then deal with it like good Americans do and don't cry, "Oh government, get me out of this!"

Debt collection agencies have been harassing people with court actions for debts they didn't even owe. They have to get a lawyer and take time off for work.

About the people that are truely down and out. Debtors prisons were abolished in the 1800's in the United States and in Europe did most other countries in the world. Today, debtors in the United Arab Emirates and other Arab countries can be imprisoned for failing to pay their debts. Is this what we want to go back to if nothing is done?

He's a great senator, and he has been very successful at getting things done. He even upsets some of the "old power" Democrats too. I've heard him speak a few times and he keeps showing how much he knows and how much he can get done.

What the hell does being free have to do with taking away peoples responsibility. What I call freedom is keeping my right of habeas corpus and not having the government listen in on my telephone and email. And open my mail and read it before I get it. Kinda sounds familiar doesn't it ,like maybe the patriot act. You know America doesn't have debtor prisons, so finding a way to throw them in jail with some catch 22 is unexceptable. Go Al your a great American. With his smarts and his wicked mouth he is going to drive republicans into the dirt, were they belong.

By and large I agree with you: People who buy something should pay for it. I don't like it when people just declare bankruptcy to shed their debts, because inevitably that cost gets eaten by consumers who actually pay their bills. But with that in mind, debt collection companies have gotten wildly out of control and snapping the whip on them to treat people with fairness isn't a bad thing.

bill also includes a requirement for all debt collectors to repeat a variation of his famous character's mantra into a mirror with a smile before every call: "I'm smart enough, I'm good enough, and debtors and Al Franken like me"
