U researchers see the State Fair as an ideal place to find families for a study on the genetic makeup of children, but some wonder if it's an appropriate venue.

negative people, will it really qualify as a random sampling? We won't ever be able to find out the dna info on the naysayers.

...so that if the wound re-opens, the people who were pricked won't get blood on things they touch which other people at the State Fair will touch.

And the real purpose is to provide fodder for genetic researchers (thought they claim to be trying to find rare genetic diseases--though, as the star tribune has reported in the past, family doctors usually figure out the child has the disease before the test results get back from the state employees).

There is no mention of any informed consent form in the article and knowing first hand the U's track record of the non-confidentiality of research subjects I would be more than a little concerned. I feel a pharmaceutical presence waiting in the shadows to have a cure for whatever shows up. So, who's paying for all the backpacks and etc now, and all the clinical staff?

I think some dude named "Adolf"-something ...once tried that.

"The ultimate goal of the "Gopher Kids'' study is to map the genetic makeup of normal, healthy children" Are there any healthy children left in the state? There are so many pesticides and hormones used in food. There's an article on CNN Health today about females hitting puberty as young children!

The U's extensive scientific research has produced thousand of procedures and developements that have saved people's lives over the past century. A fingernail and a little bit of spit isn't much to give for the potential benefits this research could yield.
